Perimeter of a Polygon

Mathematics Grade 2 Difficulty 2/5

Beginning of the lesson

πŸ”· Perimeter of a Polygon πŸ”·

Let's walk around shapes and measure how far we go!

🚢 What is Perimeter?

Perimeter is the total distance around a shape!
  • πŸ”„ It's the length of the boundary
  • πŸ‘Ÿ How far you walk if you walk around the entire edge
  • πŸ“ We add up all the sides to find it!
πŸ€” Where does the word come from?

"Peri" means around + "Meter" means measure

Perimeter = Measure Around! 🎯

Walk around all 4 sides: 5 + 3 + 5 + 3 = 16 cm

πŸ“ How to Find Perimeter

🎯 The Big Rule:

Add the lengths of ALL sides together!

This works for ANY polygon (any shape with straight sides)!

πŸ“‹ Step-by-Step Method:
  1. Count the number of sides
  2. Measure each side (or use given lengths)
  3. Write down all the side lengths
  4. Add all the side lengths together
  5. Write the answer with units (cm, m)
✨ General Formula

Perimeter = side 1 + side 2 + side 3 + ...

(Add ALL the sides!)

Walking around the shape...
