Points, Lines, and Line Segments
Welcome, little mathematician! Today we will learn about three special shapes in geometry!
What is a Point?
A point is:
- The smallest shape in geometry
- Shows only a location (a spot)
- Has no size - no length, no width, no height!
- We draw it as a tiny dot
Naming Points:
We use CAPITAL LETTERS to name points!
Examples: Point A, Point B, Point C
Interactive visualization — available in the full lesson
Real-Life Examples of Points:
A star in the sky
Dots on dice
Cities on a map
Spots on a ladybug
What is a Line?
A line is:
- A straight path that goes on forever
- Has no beginning and no end
- Is perfectly straight
- Goes in both directions forever!
Naming Lines:
Way 1: Use two points on the line: Line AB or Line BA
Way 2: Use a lowercase letter: line m, line n
Always draw arrows on BOTH ends to show it goes forever!
Interactive visualization — available in the full lesson
Real-Life Examples of Lines:
The horizon (imagine it goes forever!)
A laser beam going forever
Railroad tracks (imagine they never end!)
