Division of Positive Decimal Fractions

Mathematics Grade 6 Difficulty 2/5

Beginning of the lesson

📐 Division of Positive Decimal Fractions

Learn how to divide decimal numbers with confidence!

💡 Key Idea: Why Division of Decimals Works

Division of decimals can be converted to division of common fractions. This is the foundation of everything we'll learn!

Example: 0.6 ÷ 0.2

0.6 ÷ 0.2 = 6/10 ÷ 2/10 = 6 ÷ 2 = 3

When we divide fractions with the same denominator, we simply divide the numerators!

⚠️ Important Fact: Not All Divisions Give Exact Decimals

Some divisions produce infinite repeating decimals (бесконечная дробь):

1 ÷ 3 = 0.333...
Repeats forever!
2 ÷ 3 = 0.666...
Repeats forever!
1 ÷ 7 = 0.142857...
Pattern repeats!
