Rectangular Coordinate System on a Plane

Mathematics Grade 6 Difficulty 2/5

Beginning of the lesson

Rectangular Coordinate System on a Plane

Прямоугольная система координат на плоскости

The rectangular coordinate system (also called the Cartesian coordinate system) is a way to locate any point on a flat surface using two numbers. It's like giving every point on a plane its own unique "address"!

1. What is a Coordinate Plane?

A coordinate plane (координатная плоскость) is formed by two perpendicular number lines that intersect at their zero points:

  • X-axis (ось абсцисс) — the horizontal number line
  • Y-axis (ось ординат) — the vertical number line
  • Origin (начало координат) — the point where both axes cross, labeled O
Key Idea: Together, these two axes form the rectangular coordinate system (прямоугольная система координат).

2. Elements of the Coordinate Plane

Element Description
Origin O Intersection point at (0, 0)
X-axis Horizontal line; positive to the right
Y-axis Vertical line; positive upward
Unit segments Equal spacing marks on both axes
Arrows Show positive directions
