Introduction to Probability

Probability helps us measure how likely something is to happen. It's like predicting the future with math!

What is Probability?

Probability (вероятность) is a measure of how likely an event is to happen.

  • Expressed as a number from 0 to 1
  • 0 means impossible — it will never happen
  • 1 means certain — it will definitely happen
  • Numbers in between show different chances
Think of it this way: Probability predicts the chance of different outcomes before they happen!

Random Events

Random events (случайные события) are outcomes that cannot be predicted with certainty.

🪙

Flipping a coin

🎲

Rolling a die

🃏

Drawing a card

There's always an element of chance involved — we don't know what will happen until it happens!

Types of Events

Certain Event

(достоверное событие)

P = 1

Always happens

Example: The sun will rise tomorrow

Impossible Event

(невозможное событие)

P = 0

Never happens

Example: Rolling a 7 on a standard die

Random Event

(случайное событие)

0 < P < 1

May or may not happen

Example: Getting heads on a coin flip
