Scale (Масштаб)

Understanding how maps, drawings, and models represent real-world objects

1. What is Scale?

Scale is the ratio between a distance on a map or drawing and the corresponding real distance.

Key Idea:

Scale shows how many times a real object is reduced (made smaller) or enlarged (made bigger) in the drawing.

Example: A scale of 1:100 means:

  • 1 cm on the drawing = 100 cm in reality
  • The real object is 100 times larger than the drawing

2. Ways to Write Scale (Scale Notation)

Ratio Form

1:1000

Read as "one to one thousand"

Fraction Form

1⁄1000

As a mathematical fraction

Verbal Form

1 cm = 10 m

In words with units

All three forms express the same relationship!
1:1000 means the real object is reduced 1000 times in the drawing.
