Algebraic Expressions — Буквенные выражения

Welcome to the world of algebra! Today we'll learn how to use letters in math to represent numbers we don't know yet. This is one of the most powerful tools in mathematics!

1. What is an Algebraic Expression?

Definition: An algebraic expression is a mathematical phrase that contains:
  • Numbers (like 3, 5, −7)
  • Variables (letters like x, y, a, n)
  • Operations (+, −, ×, ÷)

Letters in algebra represent unknown or varying numbers. Think of them as empty boxes that can hold different values!

Examples of Algebraic Expressions:
  • 3a Three times some number
  • x + 5 Some number plus five
  • 2n − 7 Two times a number minus seven
  • 4xy Four times two numbers multiplied

2. Why Do We Use Letters in Math?

Using letters instead of specific numbers gives us superpowers in math!

Represent Unknowns

"I have some apples" → a apples

Write General Rules

Perimeter of square: 4s

Describe Patterns

Even numbers: 2n

Create Formulas

Distance: d = st

Key Idea: The same letter can take different values in different situations. If x = 3 today, x might equal 10 tomorrow!
