Comparing Integers

Mathematics Grade 6 Difficulty 2/5

Beginning of the lesson

Comparing Integers

Learn how to determine which integer is greater or smaller using the number line and simple rules!

1. The Number Line Method

The Golden Rule

On a number line:

  • Right = Greater (bigger numbers are to the right)
  • Left = Smaller (smaller numbers are to the left)

This visual method works for any integers — positive, negative, or zero!

Example: Compare −2 and −5

On the number line, −2 is to the RIGHT of −5

Therefore: −2 > −5

2. Basic Comparison Rules

Positive vs Zero

Any positive > 0

Examples: 1 > 0, 100 > 0

Negative vs Zero

Any negative < 0

Examples: −1 < 0, −100 < 0

Positive vs Negative

Any positive > Any negative

Example: 1 > −1000

Remember the Chain:

Negative < 0 < Positive

Example: −100 < −1 < 0 < 1 < 100
