Beginning of the lesson

Parts of an Algebraic Expression

An algebraic expression is like a mathematical sentence made up of numbers, letters, and operation signs. Just like a sentence has parts (subject, verb, object), an algebraic expression has its own special parts!

Example Expression: 3x + 5y − 7
Let's learn to identify every part of expressions like this one!

1 Term (член/слагаемое)

Definition: A term is a part of an expression separated by + or − signs.

In the expression: 3x + 5y − 7

The three terms are:

  • 3x — first term
  • 5y — second term
  • −7 — third term (note: the minus sign belongs to it!)
Important: The sign in front of a term belongs to that term!
Visual: Identifying Terms
3x + 5y − 7 3x 5y −7 Term 1 Term 2 Term 3 + − Signs separate the terms

2 Coefficient (коэффициент)

Definition: The coefficient is the numerical factor (number) that multiplies the variable.

Term Coefficient Explanation
5x 5 The number in front
−3ab −3 Include the negative sign!
x 1 Invisible 1 (x = 1·x)
−y −1 Invisible −1 (−y = −1·y)
Anatomy of a Term
−5xy Coefficient (−5) Variables (x and y) Literal part: xy
