Prism and Pyramid

Mathematics Grade 6 Difficulty 2/5

Beginning of the lesson

Prism and Pyramid (Призма и Пирамида)

Understanding 3D shapes with polygon bases

1. What is a Prism? (Что такое призма?)

Definition:

A prism is a 3D shape (three-dimensional figure) that has:

  • Two identical parallel bases — the bases are congruent polygons
  • Lateral faces — parallelograms (rectangles in a right prism)
  • Lateral edges — connect corresponding vertices of the bases
Key Properties:
  • Bases are always parallel to each other
  • Bases have the same shape and size
  • The shape is named by its base polygon

Interactive: Drag to rotate the triangular prism

2. Types of Prisms by Base (Виды призм по основанию)

Triangular Prism

Треугольная призма

  • Base: Triangle (3 sides)
  • Total faces: 5
  • 2 triangular bases + 3 rectangular faces
Quadrangular Prism

Четырёхугольная призма

  • Base: Quadrilateral (4 sides)
  • Total faces: 6
  • 2 quadrilateral bases + 4 rectangular faces
Pentagonal Prism

Пятиугольная призма

  • Base: Pentagon (5 sides)
  • Total faces: 7
  • 2 pentagonal bases + 5 rectangular faces
Interactive visualization — available in the full lesson

Three types of prisms: Triangular (blue), Quadrangular (orange), Pentagonal (red)
