Beginning of the lesson

Concept of Volume. Units of Volume Measurement

Understanding how to measure the space inside three-dimensional objects

What is Volume?

Volume is the amount of space occupied by a three-dimensional (3D) object. It measures "how much fits inside" an object.

Think About It!

Imagine filling a box with small cubes. The number of cubes that fit inside tells you the volume!

Comparing Dimensions:
Measurement Dimensions What It Measures Example
Length 1D (one) Distance A line segment
Area 2D (two) Surface A rectangle
Volume 3D (three) Space inside A box

Volume vs Capacity

Volume

The amount of space an object occupies

Example: A solid wooden block has volume

Measured in: cubic units (cm³, m³)

Capacity

How much a container can hold

Example: A glass has capacity for water

Measured in: liters (L, mL)

Important Connection

Volume and capacity are closely related! 1 liter = 1 cubic decimeter (1 L = 1 dm³)
