Dividing in a Given Ratio

Mathematics Grade 6 Difficulty 2/5

Beginning of the lesson

Dividing in a Given Ratio

When we divide in a given ratio, we split a quantity into parts according to specific proportions. This is like sharing fairly, but not equally — each person gets a share based on the ratio.

What Does It Mean?

Imagine you have 100 som to divide between two friends in the ratio 2:3.

  • The first friend gets 2 shares
  • The second friend gets 3 shares
  • Total: 5 shares altogether
Key Idea: The ratio tells us how many "parts" or "shares" each person receives, not the actual amount!

The Main Method: 3 Simple Steps

Step 1
Add the Ratio Terms

Find the total number of parts

2 + 3 = 5 parts
Step 2
Find One Part

Divide the quantity by total parts

100 ÷ 5 = 20 som
Step 3
Multiply

Multiply one part by each ratio term

2 × 20 = 40
3 × 20 = 60
