Understanding Three-Digit Numbers (0-1000)
What You'll Learn: How to read, write, and understand numbers up to 1000!
Part 1: Place Value - The Secret of Three-Digit Numbers
Every three-digit number has three special positions, and each position has a different value!
The Three Positions:
- Hundreds Place - The leftmost digit (worth 100s)
- Tens Place - The middle digit (worth 10s)
- Ones Place - The rightmost digit (worth 1s)
Remember: The number 347 means 3 hundreds + 4 tens + 7 ones = 300 + 40 + 7 = 347
Part 2: Reading and Writing Three-Digit Numbers
When we read three-digit numbers, we say the hundreds first, then the tens and ones together.
How to Read Numbers
| Number | How to Read It | Breaking It Down |
|---|---|---|
| 234 | "two hundred thirty-four" | 2 hundreds, 3 tens, 4 ones |
| 508 | "five hundred eight" | 5 hundreds, 0 tens, 8 ones |
| 760 | "seven hundred sixty" | 7 hundreds, 6 tens, 0 ones |
| 800 | "eight hundred" | 8 hundreds, 0 tens, 0 ones |
Special Note: When there's a zero in the tens or ones place, we don't say it! For example, 305 is "three hundred five" (not "three hundred zero five").
