Commutative Property of Multiplication

Mathematics Grade 3 Difficulty 1/5

Beginning of the lesson

What is the Commutative Property of Multiplication?

The Big Idea: When you multiply two numbers, you can switch their order and still get the same answer!

The commutative property tells us that 3 × 4 gives the same answer as 4 × 3. The order doesn't matter!

Let's See It With Pictures!

Imagine you have rows of apples. Look at these two ways to arrange them:

3 × 4 = 12

3 rows of 4 apples

Mathematical diagram
4 × 3 = 12

4 rows of 3 apples
