Area: Understanding and Calculating Area of Rectangles and Squares

Mathematics Grade 3 Difficulty 3/5

Beginning of the lesson

Understanding Area

What is Area?

Area is the amount of space inside a flat shape. Imagine you're covering your bedroom floor with square tiles - the area tells you how many tiles you need!

Think of area as the "inside space" of a shape. It's different from perimeter, which is the distance around the outside edge.

Remember: Perimeter = distance AROUND a shape
Area = space INSIDE a shape

Visualizing Area with Unit Squares

We measure area by counting how many unit squares fit inside a shape. A unit square is a square with sides of 1 unit.

Mathematical diagram

By counting the squares, we can find the area. But there's an easier way using formulas!
