Understanding Division of Multi-Digit Numbers
What You Already Know: You're great at division facts like \(12 \div 3 = 4\)! Now we'll use those skills to divide bigger numbers like \(84 \div 4\) or \(368 \div 2\).
🎯 The Long Division Method
Long division is like solving a puzzle step by step. We break big problems into smaller pieces using the division facts you already know!
The Four Steps of Long Division:
- Divide — How many times does the divisor fit into the current part of the dividend?
- Multiply — Multiply the quotient by the divisor to see what you used
- Subtract — Find what's left over from the current step
- Bring Down — Bring down the next digit of the dividend and repeat!
Remember it as: "Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down"

Divide
M
Multiply
S

B
Bring Down
📝 Important Terminology:
- Dividend — the number being divided (e.g., 84 in \(84 \div 4\))
- Divisor — the number we're dividing by (e.g., 4 in \(84 \div 4\))
- Quotient — the result of division (the answer)
- Remainder — what's left over if division isn't exact
- Rule: The remainder must always be smaller than the divisor!
📊 The Long Division "House" Diagram
Here's how long division is written with proper names for all the parts:
