Parts of a Whole: Understanding Halves, Quarters, and Thirds

Mathematics Grade 3 Difficulty 2/5

Beginning of the lesson

Understanding Parts of a Whole

What You'll Learn: How to divide things into equal parts, understand halves, quarters, and thirds, and use these ideas in everyday life!

What is a Whole?

A whole is something complete and not divided. Think of a whole pizza, a whole apple, or a whole group of 12 cookies. When something is whole, it's all together in one piece or one complete set.

What is a Part?

A part (or share) is a piece of the whole. When we break or divide something into parts, each piece is a part of the original whole.

Important: For parts to be fair, they must be equal in size!
