Collecting and Representing Data with Graphs

Mathematics Grade 3 Difficulty 2/5

Beginning of the lesson

Collecting and Representing Data with Graphs

Graphs help us show information in a way that's easy to understand. They're like pictures of numbers!

What is Data?

Data is information that we collect. For example, we might collect data about:

  • Your classmates' favorite colors
  • The number of pets each student has
  • The types of books students like to read
  • How students get to school each day

When we collect data, we're like detectives gathering clues to answer questions!

How Do We Collect Data?

There are many ways to collect data:

  1. Surveys: Asking people questions
  2. Counting: Keeping track of how many times something happens
  3. Measuring: Using rulers, scales, or other tools
  4. Observing: Watching and recording what you see

After collecting data, we organize it to make it easier to understand.

Organizing Data

Before making a graph, we often organize our data in a tally chart or table.

A tally chart uses marks like this: | | | | (with the fifth mark crossing the first four: ||||) to count items.

A table arranges information in rows and columns to make it easy to read.
