Circles and Circle Properties: Center, Radius, Diameter, and Construction with Compass

Mathematics Grade 3 Difficulty 2/5

Beginning of the lesson

🔵 Let's Learn About Circles!

What is a Circle?

A circle is a special round shape where every point on the edge is the same distance from the center. Think of a pizza, a clock, or a wheel!

Circle vs. Disk

It's important to know the difference:

  • Circle: Just the round line (the edge)
  • Disk (Circular Region): The circle plus everything inside it

Think of a hula hoop (circle) versus a pancake (disk)!

📍 Important Parts of a Circle

1. Center

The center is the middle point of the circle. It's like the bullseye on a target! Every point on the circle is the same distance from the center.

2. Radius

The radius is the distance from the center to any point on the circle. It's like a spoke on a bicycle wheel! We can draw many radii (that's the plural of radius) in one circle, and they're all the same length.

3. Diameter

The diameter is a line that goes all the way across the circle, passing through the center. It's the longest distance across the circle!

4. Circumference

The circumference is the distance around the circle - the length of the edge! If you walked around the outside of a circular track, you'd be walking the circumference.
