Understanding Dividing a Sum by a Number
What Does This Mean?
When we divide a sum by a number, we're splitting a total amount into equal groups. There's a special trick that makes this easier!
Imagine you have some apples and oranges together. Instead of counting all the fruit first and then dividing, you can divide the apples separately, divide the oranges separately, and then add those answers together!
The Magic Rule
The Distributive Property of Division:
(a + b) ÷ c = (a ÷ c) + (b ÷ c)
(a + b) ÷ c = (a ÷ c) + (b ÷ c)
This fancy name just means: You can divide each part separately, then add the results!
