Length Measurement: Units, Relationships, and Conversions

Mathematics Grade 3 Difficulty 2/5

Beginning of the lesson

Understanding Length and Distance

What is Length?

Length is how long or far something is. When we measure length, we find out the distance from one end to the other end of an object, or how far apart two things are.

Imagine measuring your pencil, the width of your desk, or how far you walk to school. All of these are measurements of length!

Why Do We Need Different Units?

Just like we wouldn't use a ruler to measure the distance to another city, we need different units for different sizes!

Small Things: We use millimeters (mm) or centimeters (cm) to measure tiny objects like the width of your fingernail or the length of an eraser.
Big Things: We use meters (m) or kilometers (km) to measure large distances like the height of a building or the distance between cities.
