Mass Measurement: Grams, Kilograms, and Converting Between Units

Mathematics Grade 3 Difficulty 2/5

Beginning of the lesson

Understanding Mass: Grams and Kilograms

What is Mass?

Mass tells us how much matter (or "stuff") is in an object. Everything around you has mass - your pencil, your backpack, even you!

Fun Fact: Mass stays the same no matter where you are - on Earth, on the Moon, or in space!

Mass vs. Weight: What's the Difference?

Mass
  • How much matter is in something
  • Always stays the same
  • Measured in grams (g) and kilograms (kg)
Weight
  • How heavy something feels
  • Changes in different places (Earth vs. Moon)
  • Measured in pounds or newtons

Simple way to remember: Mass is about the "stuff" inside. Weight is about how gravity pulls on that stuff!
