Introduction to Multiplication: Review and Foundations

Mathematics Grade 3 Difficulty 1/5

Beginning of the lesson

What is Multiplication?

The Big Idea

Multiplication is a quick way to add the same number over and over again!

When we see 3 × 4, it means:

  • "3 groups of 4" or
  • "3 times 4" or
  • "4 added 3 times"
Think of it this way: Instead of writing 4 + 4 + 4, we can write 3 × 4 = 12

Five Ways to Show Multiplication

1. Repeated Addition

3 × 4 means: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12

4+4+4=12
2. Equal Groups

3 groups with 4 objects in each group

3. Arrays (Rows and Columns)

3 rows of 4 dots = 12 dots

4. Skip Counting

Count by 4s, three times: 4, 8, 12

5. Real-World Example

3 boxes with 4 cookies in each box = 12 cookies total
